Betelnut-stained lips and gold earrings
In this exhibition, I reinspect my culture and childhood as a woman in Myanmar. Since my earlier age, I often questioned the depiction of femininity, and all the rules and expectations that were imposed on me growing up. Questions that turned to criticism when such rules allow oppression of one gender, and even victim shaming among women. Yet, these rules can be broken when it benefits the oppressors. Using contradictory brush strokes and symbolism I hope to reveal the same dichotomies and biased expectations that exists in my culture.
